Imphal, September 30 2025:
The "Threads of Peace: Yarn Bank for Women weavers in Thoubal", a new initiative aimed at empowering women weavers and fostering peace through sustainable livelihoods was launched today at Phoudel in Thoubal district.
The Yarn Bank has been established to provide collective and affordable access to yarn - the primary raw material for weaving.
The initiative is designed to strengthen Manipur's indigenous weaving traditions while also offering an economic foundation to conflict-affected communities, contributing to peacebuilding and social stability.
The inaugural program saw active participation from women weavers, community leaders, youth, and peace advocates.
The event served as a platform to highlight the importance of women's economic empowerment as a tool for resilience, dignity, and social harmony.
Supported by the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network (MWGSN) and the Northeast India Women's Initiative for Peace (NEIWIP), the project reflects the organisation's long-standing commitment to women-led peacebuilding and livelihood restoration in Manipur and across the Northeast.
Through the Yarn Ban, women will be able to make affordable yarn deposits and withdrawals, fostering a culture of cooperation and solidarity.
By encouraging collective ownership and management, the initiative seeks to reduce the financial burden oh individual weavers and promote self-reliance.
