Imphal, October 29 2016:
The JAC on Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Chadong Village has threatened to launch intense modes of agitation in case the State Government fails to initiate due procedures for proper rehabilitation and resettlement of Chadong villagers affected by Mapithel Dam.
Speaking to media persons today, JAC convenor W Kasar said that the Government should never commission the project until the process of resettlement and rehabilitation is completed.
The area identified for resettlement and land development activities taken up are far from satisfactory.
There is neither potable water facility nor power connection.
Moreover the approach road has not been constructed, Kasar said.
Neither the local MLA nor the Minister concerned nor any of the relevant officials have ever visited the site identified for resettlement, Kasar decried.
With all the agricultural lands submerged by the dam, people of Chadong village have been struggling hard for survival.
On account of the State Government's repeated failure to fulfil its own assurances, the villagers have lost whatever little faith they had in the Government.
The recent uproar seen at Ukhrul against the Chief Minister's visit was a reflection of the people's deep rooted grievances against the Government, said the JAC convenor.
Construction of the dam while overlooking all the miseries created by the dam cannot be called development.
He went on to ask how long the homeless people can take refuge in neighbouring villages.
