To counter black marketeers, mobile sale of rice begins

Imphal, June 29 2012:
In consonance with the announcement made by Minister of Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Moirangthem Okendro, mobile sale of rice at subsidised rates to the people began from today through the outlets opened for the purpose at ten different places under Imphal Municipality area.
The sale of rice at government rates began as soon as an order in this regard was issued by Directorate of Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution from 10 am till 5 pm today.
The designated outlets where mobile sale of rice was carried out by officials of the Directorate are Thangal Bazaar, Paona Bazaar, Waheng Leikai Parking, Sagolband Parking, Khuyathong Parking, Municipality Mamang, Samu Makhong, Andro Parking, ISBT Khuman Lampak and Churachandpur Parking.

All the 10 outlets were provided with 50 Qtls of rice each.
As soon as mobile sale of rice commenced, people in hundreds rushed to the spot to get their shares.
Each of the buyers was provided 15 kg of rice at the rate of Rs 9 per kg.
In some outlets, people were issued tokens and the rate as well as the quantity of rice to be made available to an individual was displayed prominently.
However, at some outlets, it was found that the people were provided rice measured with the help of edible oil tin, which barely weight 15 kgs, while in others measurement was made accurately using electronic equipments from Weight and Measures Department.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, one Chaoba of Moirangkhom, said that the step taken up by Department of Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution was praiseworthy and it should be done on regular basis.
This will solve the problem of artificial scarcity of rice created by the big businessmen in the state, he noted.
He also pointed out the need to expand the measures being taken up in other parts of the state.
