M Samarendro, Sub Divisional Engineer in charge of BSNL, Thoubal district spoke on rural telephony.
Asserting that in order to provide good service to the people, the BSNL needs co-operation and understanding of all departments concernedPolice and the people, Samarendro lamented that there is lack of cooperation, especially in Thoubal district.
Thievery of underground cables in the state is common.
Though there is not much copper in the cable which can fetch huge amount of money, some people still steal the cables.
Though complaints are lodged with the Police, they do not take up much action to detect and book the culprits.
He also regretted that there is no cooperation from the State Public Works Department either.
The PWD, without informing the BSNL authority, just dig up the roads and cut off thousands of land line telephone cables which are buried underground.
Though the BSNL authority had complained to the authority of PWD so many times, the engineers have not extended much cooperation.
He said, at present there are 35,437 BSNL mobile subscribers, 2939 land line connections (earlier over 5000/6000 connections), 3157 WLL, 286 broadband connections and 35 WIMAX connections in Thoubal district.
