Thoubal, June 28 2016:
Former Minister and BJP spokesperson M Hemanta today lashed out at Chief Minister Okram Ibobi for the latter's remark on the sinking of the newly inaugurated multi storeyed shopping complex at Thoubal Wangmataba on Sunday.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, during his inspection of the damaged structure on Sunday, said there are no technical defects in the construction of the building and that the contractor and engineers should not be blamed for the damages.
BJP spokesperson M Hemanta, in a statement questioned who is to blame for the damages if it was neither the engineer's or the contractor's fault.
"Was it the building's fault then ?", the former Minister remarked.
The behaviour of the Chief Minister only justifies the rumour that the contract for the building was handled by 'powerful' people.
No open tender was held for the project and the name of the contractor who had handled the project has not been made public, Hemanta observed.
The State Government was expected to take stern action against the contractor or engineer concerned for the damages.
On the contrary however, the CM gave the clear signal to both the contractor and the engineer by stating that there is no technical defect in the construction of the building, he said.
The State Government should throw the faulty contractor and engineer into jail instead of running after Khomdram Ratan (former JCILPS convenor), the former Minister said in the statement.
It was fortunate that the incident happened before the market opened to public, else hundreds could have lost their lives, Hemanta said.
