To commemorate the 98th birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien, who is known as the Father of the White Revolution in India, Manipur Milk Producers' Co-operative Union Ltd Porompat organised National Milk Day at Central Dairy Plant Porompat today.
Director, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services Manipur Dr H Chaoba graced the function as the chief guest while Deputy Registrar (Adm), Department of Cooperation Manipur O Jiten and Manipur Milk Producers' Co-operative Union (MMPCU) chairman Ch Ramananda also attended as dignitaries.
Speaking at the function, Dr H Chaoba said that Dr Verghese Kurien is known as the father of the White Revolution because of his efforts and contribution in the dairy sector.
Dr Verghese Kurien, born on November 26, 1921 pursued his graduation in Physics.
He started the famous brand Amul (formerly named Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd) in a small city and ultimately made India the largest producer of milk.
Maintaining that Manipur Milk Producers' Co-operative Union is an autonomous body, Dr Chaoba lauded the body and its board of directors for taking up the initiative of providing milk to the public.
He stressed on the need to set the target to produce 2000 tonnes of milk for the people of the State, which has not yet achieved.
The Government will also be rendering the necessities to the cattle farmers under the union, he added.
Milk has become popular as people have become more aware about the benefits of milk in a human's body apart from being an important ingredient in making tea or other foods/drinks, he said.
Conveying that the milk demands have increased tenfold, he urged all concerned to reach the target and produce quality milk for the public.
On the other hand, the initiative of vaccinating calves are also becoming popular following the directive of the Prime Minister from September 11 last year, Dr Chaoba added.
However, it has not been successful to vaccinate all the calves in the State, he noted.
Considering the crucial role of cattle farmers in producing milk, he maintained that awareness programmes including vaccination of calves are carried out often.
Dr Chaoba further informed that almost all the residents in the city consume milk and urged all concerned to strive towards producing quality milk to fulfil the demands of the public.
