College teachers stage sit-in

College teachers under the aegis of Federation of Government College Teachers' Association (FEG-OCTA) staged a sit-in at Imphal College today against the alleged apathy of the Govt and lack of political will to implement national education policy in the State and failure to work towards bringing quality education.
Appointment of regular Director and Principals and to make the Directorate of Education (U) functional; to fill up vacant posts of teachers, librarians and support staff; to provide adequate class rooms, teaching aides, toilets, science laboratories, drinking water, electricity etc; to implement 6th UGC ROP in toto in the State; to release SCA and TA of college teachers for 36 months are amongst others the demands raised by the agitating college teachers, according to Dr N Somorendro Singh, general secretary of FEGOGTA.
The teachers also demanded implementation of new pay scale for college teachers from April 1, 2010 and make necessary arrangement to release arrears from Oct 2009 as done to other employees of the State Govt, Dr Somorendro said.
Releasing of arrears from Jan 1, 2006 to March 31, 2010 by availing 80 % Central financial assistance, subject to adjustment; to ensure timely place- ment and promotion of college teachers and to stop random transfer and harassment to teachers etc are the other demands of the teachers.
Besides deciding to take up legal course of action on certain issues regarding alleged discrim- ination of the teachers, the Association has also decided to submit a memo to the Governor, CM and Education Minister urging them to take up necessary action.
