Imphal, November 24 2010:
Observing that the ban imposed on Shumang Leela performance by KCP through a statement issued by Yaiphanba of its information and public relations department was unfortunate for all those who are trying to promote this art form, Manipur Shumang Leela Council has appealed for lifting the ban.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at the Council office at Palace Compound here today, its secretary Hemanta clarified that the allegation of converting Shumang Leela into some business enterprises is far from truth.
He said that besides the performance fee that Shumang Leela artistes received from the public, there is no question of bargaining the amount of the fee to be taken.
After subtracting the amount for hiring sound system, vehicle and expensive costumes, the remaining is divided among the artistes who live on this meagre income.
In response to a question, Hemanta informed that none of the Shumang Leela groups registered under the Council have received any demand note or threat from any UG group.
However, on September 30 last, the Council received a demand note of Rs 10 lakh signed by Imphal East district commander cum fund raiser in charge of KCP Malemnganba and addressed to Manipur Shumang Leela Association.
As the demand note was not addressed to the Council, the matter did not come up for discussion during the Council meeting, he informed, adding that even if the demand note had been addressed to the Council, it would not have been any position to meet the demand.
Instead of imposing ban on Shumang Leela performance, please come up with suggestion and advice on further development of Shumang Leela as popular art form, he appealed to all concerned.
