As part of the State Government's attempt to check flood during monsoon seasons by clearing various structures along the banks of the major rivers of the State, Imphal East District Administration carried out various joint inspection drives along the banks of Iril river today.
It may be mentioned that based on the instruction of Water Resources Department, Manipur, under the Manipur Flood Plain Zoning Act 1978, Imphal East District Administration has cleared various illegal structures which were built by encroaching on the banks of Imphal river.
According to an official source, Imphal East DC Th Chitra led the joint inspection trip starting from Itam Nungoi, under Sawombung subdivision, upto Thangbijou, under Porompat subdivision, to assess the various illegal structures built on the banks of Iril river today.
Imphal East district SP K Meghachandra, SDOs concerned and officials of Revenue and Water Resources Department also accompanied the DC on the joint inspection trip.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Imphal East DC Th Chitra narrated that earlier the District Administration issued a notification under Manipur Flood Plain Zoning Act 1978 directing all those concerned to voluntarily dismantle the illegal structures which were built after encroaching on the banks of the Imphal river within 45 days.
The structures which stayed even after the said deadline were dismantled using JCBs.
She continued that the District Administration already issued, a notification on April 2, informing all the illegal structures built along Iril river to be voluntarily dismantled within 45 days as well and added that the joint inspection drive has been organised with the aim of finding out which structures are to be dismantled as the deadline has expired.
She explained that a joint inspection will be carried out at the river banks of Iril river along Keirao subdivision and after the inspection drive wraps up, no prior warning will be issued and the District Administration will immediately start dismantling the illegal/encroaching structures.
The DC admitted that some of the owners of such structures did possess land documents but she explained that for such cases, the District Administration will take up necessary actions after verifying the documents.
During the joint inspection drive today, the officials came across various structures, like schools, public crematorium, water pump house, Panchayat ghar, community hall etc.
If proper documents for these structures are not produced, they will be dismantled.
On the other hand, those structures with proper and genuine documents will be taken into consideration to see if they, can be shifted to another location, the DC added and informed that the officials concerned would be informed regarding the same.
On the other hand, the DC also said that the officials came across market sheds which had been converted into pig pens by people during the drive today.
