Imphal, December 23 2024:
Village volunteers and youths who have emerged in defense of Manipur need to be guided in the right direction under a firm leadership.
Otherwise, they may be led astray, said former rebel leader Ningthemcha Sanayaima alias RK Meghen.
He made the remark during the unveiling ceremony of the statue of Maharaj Gambhir Singh and Medingu Nara Singh with the soldiers of Manipur Levy at Manipur Levy Lampak, Chandrapur in Assam.
The event was jointly organised by the Maharaj Gambhir Singh Memorial Committee, Chandrapur Cachar; United People's Front (UPF); Manipuri Youth Front of Assam (MYFA) and Hingminasi Manipur.
The ceremony kicked off with the hoisting of a red flag, similar to the one used by the Manipur Levy, and the presentation of Thang-Ta and other traditional performances.
Following this, the statue was unveiled and floral tributes were offered.
Speaking as the chief guest, RK Meghen stated that it is time to question whose mistake has emboldened immigrants to demand a piece of Manipur for themselves.
He pointed out that those who have stepped up to protect the people, the CSOs, the State Government and the public are all moving in different directions.
Inimical forces are taking advantage of this lack of unity, he maintained.
Ensuring the continued existence of one's community and safeguarding one's motherland depends on the bravery of the people, said RK Meghen.
He also urged people to keep the newly unveiled statue well-maintained and recall the valour of the Manipur Levy soldiers, Maharaj Gambhir Singh and Medingu Nara Singh.
The event was also graced by Assam Minister Kaushik Rai; Nongthombam Rupachandra, president, UPF; Keisham Bidyapati, president, Maharaj Gambhir Singh Memorial Committee, Chandrapur, Cachar; Thangjam Brojen, president, MYFA; YK Dhiren, president, UCM; UPF advisors Khomdram Ratan and Leishangbam Jadumani; social worker Nameirakpam Budhachandra and Ngasekpam Sanahal, president, All Assam Manipuri Students Union among others.
