Akha Shalomi's killing Condemnations pour in from different bodies
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, July 22 2014: Several organisations have strongly condemned the brutality meted out to the people of North East region in mainland India.

Condemning the killing of Akha Shalomi, All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) expressed concern over the repeated racial attacks meted out to the North Easterners in Delhi.

ATSUM President Emboi Serto said that any kind of racism must be dealt with sternly and systematically.

He said that no leniency must be shown to the persons who discriminates, humiliates, attacks, rapes and kills people from NE region.

Emboi Serto said that even the committee, constituted after the killing of Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh, submitted its report, the Government has not done anything regarding protection of NE people.

Urging the State Governments to press their counterpart in Delhi to do the needful at the earliest, Emboi Serto appealed to the people of North East region residing in the mainland India to be alert when they venture out of their houses.

Joining the voice against the murder of K Wilungbou Chawang of Oklong Village on July 6 and Akha Shalomi of Tungjoy village on July 21, Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) condemned the act and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

Sending out strong message to Manipur Government, Delhi Government, elected members and concerned officials, SDSA said that the student body would not tolerate crimes against humanity.

It demanded that justice be delivered to the victims failing of which SDSA would react accordingly.

SDSA also expressed heartfelt condolence to K Wilongbou Chawang and Akha Shalomi and shared grief with the bereaved family members.

Condemning the incident, Kuki Students' Organisation General Headquarters said that it is a matter of concern that safety of North East people in Delhi cannot be assured.

KSO demanded that the Government in Delhi come up with a foolproof security arrangement for NE people.

Lauding the Delhi Police for arresting five persons in the case, KSO said that the culprits must be awarded capital punishment.

KSO also urged all the student bodies of Manipur to protect and fight against such racial attacks.

Meanwhile, Naga Students' Federation (NSF) warned that continuous assault on the people from the North East would further alienate them from mainstream India.

Condemning the alleged murder, NSF general secretary Easter Rhakho warned that the people from the North East would not remain calm and that the Centre would be solely held responsible for the fallout of the atrocities and assault on the people from the Northeast.

"We have time and again asked the Government of India to take all measures to safeguard people from the Northeast but no concrete steps have been taken so far," she warned.

Rhakho called for unity among the people of the region in all issues confronting them.

She said people of the region have been asking their respective state governments to take up the issue with the Centre.

Decrying the killing of Akha Salouni, All Manipur Tribal Rights Protection Forum Manipur (ATRPFM) demanded that police personnel from NE region be deployed in Delhi for the protection of the people from the region.

The student body also demanded enactment of an anti-racial discrimination Act in order to check such racial attacks.

On the otherhand, ATRPFM also condemned the assassination of former Ukhrul ADC Vice-Chairman Ngalangjar Malue.

In a press statement, ATRPFM said that the incident was a result of State Government's failure to devolve power to ADCs.

However, killings and any violent activities would not bring any solution, ATRPFM said.

It also urged the concerned to restrain from such acts in future.

In the meantime, ATRPFM also demanded the State Government to withdraw additional State security forces and 144 CrPc from Ukhrul town.

It cautioned that ATRPFM would initiate agitation if the Government fails to fulfil their demands.
