Imphal, August 19 2015:
A large group of women today marched to the residence of Oinam A/C MLA Dr I Ibohalbi at Oinam Irengbam.
Apart from submitting a memorandum which sought implementation of ILPS or similar mechanism in Manipur, the protesters threatened to boycott Assembly election likely to be held in 2017 in case an effective Bill for protection of indigenous people is not passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
They also shouted slogans demanding implementation of ILPS and punishment of police personnel involved in the killing of Sapam Robinhood.
They asked MLA Ibohalbi to resign from being an MLA if he cannot do anything to enforce ILPS in the State.
Responding to the protesters, Ibohalbi said that he raised a number of motions in the State Assembly since 2011 for enforcement of ILPS in the State.
He maintained that the Government would collapse in the face of the massive, sustained movement in case the Bill for protection of indigenous people is not passed.
He promised that he would discharge his duties fully as an Opposition MLA.
"I have no reservation to resign from the post of MLA if we cannot fulfil the aspiration of public", Ibohalbi said.
On the other hand, volunteers of the Joint Coordinating Committee NH 37 today marched to Taobungkhok residence of Patsoi A/C MLA AK Mirabai and submitted a memorandum seeking incorporation of the five points suggested by JCILPS in the new Bill.
Mirabai informed the protesters that the JCILPS and the State Government have already come to an understanding on incorporating the five points in the new Bill.
