Imphal, August 17 2020:
Congress party has lambasted the Home Department for the outrageous conferment of Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry Award to a police Sub-Inspector involved in trafficking drugs worth more than Rs three crore.
Congress party has even demanded resignation of Chief Minister N Biren who is also in charge of Home Department as well as the IGP Intelligence on moral ground.
Speaking to media persons at his Babupara quarters today, Congress MLA K Meghachandra asserted that the Home Department has failed completely.
It is becoming clearer and clearer that the Home Department has been conniving with drug smugglers, he alleged.
By listing SI B Debson who was named in a trafficking case among the recipients of Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry Award, the 74th Independence Day celebration was reduced to a farce, Meghachandra remarked.
B Debson of Singjamei Wangma Bheigyabati Leikai was arrested with contraband drugs worth more than Rs three crore at Pallel on April 28, 2013 .
It was rather surprising that a drug smuggler was conferred the Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry Award amid the burning issue of Lhukhosei Zou and the Luwangsangbam drug seizure case, he said.
Pointing out that selection of recipients for the Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry Award is not an easy process, the Congress MLA asked what the Home Department was doing all these days until AMSU pointed out their own folly.
As the Home Department has failed completely, the incumbent Government has no right to continue in office, Meghachandra said.
Opposition Members raised a number of points regarding drug smuggling cases during the one-day Assembly session held on August 10 but the Government did not pay any heed.
The Government did not pay any attention to the Opposition Members' revelation that higher police authorities, workers/supporters of BJP and LJP were involved in several drug smuggling cases, Meghachandra decried.
The State Government's 'War on drugs' is meaningless.
It has no direction and no objective but is just an empty propaganda of the Government.
While people in multi-crore drug smuggling cases were honoured with awards and condoned, people who dared to critique the Government's policies in the interest of the State are being gagged and harassed, he asserted.
Asserting that the incumbent Government has failed on all aspects, the Congress MLA demanded resignation of the Chief Minister and the IGP (Intelligence) on moral ground at
the earliest.
