Districts observe National Road Safety Week

Kangpokpi, January 17 2020: Under the aegis of Department of Transport, the 31st National Road Safety Week was observed for the first time at Kangpokpi DHQs today.

Lunseh Kipgen, Chairman, Kangpokpi Town Committee, Ottong Khongsai, DTO Kangpokpi and Sony G Sang, SDPO Kangpokpi attended the event organized by District Transport Officer, Kangpokpi District, Manipur as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Hundreds of drivers, including auto drivers plying within the town, private vehicles owners, student community and CSOs leaders also attended the function where safety traffics rules were demonstrated.

Speaking at the function, Lunseh Kipgen suggested installing CCTV camera in all the Police Stations along National Highway-2 including Kangpokpi Police Station, Gamnom-Saparmeina Police Station, SP Office Kangpokpi and DTO Kangpokpi so that hit and run case can be solved easily.

Considering the rapid increase of road accident, Kangpokpi Town Committee had already installed speed limit signboards of 20 km/hr in the two entry points of the town since last year but the enforcement part by the authority concerned is still pathetic, he added.

Sony G Sang said that district police will shortly begin organizing seminar and awareness campaign at schools, villages and other appropriate places to spread awareness on road safety and traffic rules, which he says is the top priority of Kangpokpi SP.

He also said that student community should be well aware of the traffic rules so that they can impart the knowledge to their parents.

Interestingly, Ottong Khongsai, DTO Kangpokpi said that the observation of the 31st National Road Safety Week this year is the first-ever observation since the establishment of DTO Kangpokpi.

With the increasing incidents of road rage and accident in Kangpokpi District, it is imperative to educate people on road safety, he said adding that most accidents are caused due to driver negligence.

He also highlighted the penalties for traffic violation from September 1, 2019 under the Manipur Gazette while emphasizing on the road accident data in Manipur as published under the directive of Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (CoRS).

According to the data, numbers of road accidents is increased by 21.95 per cent in between September 2018 and September 2019 while the number of fatalities and injuries are increased by 12.77 per cent and 14.51 per cent respectively within the same period.

It may be mentioned that road accident along NH-2 in Kangpokpi has become a daily routine since the New Year.

The 31st National Road Safety Week was also observed at Kakching, Tengnoupal and Thoubal Districts.
