Rapist gets 10 years in jail

RK Memcha, Imphal West Session Judge today, sentenced 32 year old Meisnam Suresh Singh of Ghari Awang Leikai to 10 years in jail, apart from slapping a fine of Rs 15,000 for raping the younger sister of one of his friends on August 14, 2014 .
Meisnam Suresh was convicted by the same Court on January 6.Suresh was produced before the Court for the sentence hearing today.
During the hearing, State APP A Nilachandra submitted that Meisnam Suresh was convicted under Section 376 of the IPC (Rape) which is a serious offence and narrated that Suresh used to frequently visit the victim's house as he was said to be friend of her elder brother.
Taking advantage of his position, the convict committed the crime of rape, the APP explained, praying for the convict to be sentenced to life imprisonment along with fine.
On the other hand, the defense counsel of the convict contended that Suresh is now a married man and he has been looking after his wife and child prior to his conviction and detention in custody, and prayed for awarding the minimum sentence.
After considering all materials on record and the submissions of the two parties, the Court sentenced Meisnam Suresh to 10 years in jail, apart from ordering him to pay a fine of Rs 15,000 .
In default of payment of the fine, he has to undergo another two months in jail, the Court ruled.
It may be mentioneed that on August 14, 2014, the victim was sexually assaulted by the convict while she was sleeping in her room, taking advantage of absence of people in the house during the particular hour.
