Imphal, December 14 2024:
Demanding immediate action on the previously submitted Charter of Demands, the Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM) staged a sit-in protest in front of Tangkhul Baptist Church, Imphal (TBCI) on Friday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the sit-in, TYCM president Momo Tantanga said that the council had earlier submitted an ultimatum to the Chief Minister, demanding the Government to address and implement the Charter of Demands on or before November 29, 2024.He lamented despite numerous memorandums and appeals, the council has not received any positive response from the Government regarding the Charter of Demands.
He also criticized the Government of Manipur for neglecting the tribal communities across various sectors, calling the delay in disbursing scholarships a blatant violation of the students' fundamental rights.
He highlighted the alarming condition of key tribal institutions, including the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST), and the Tribal Research Institute (TRI).
He claimed that these institutions are reportedly on the verge of collapse due to widespread staff retirements and inadequate manpower, rendering them ineffective in addressing the needs of the tribal population.
Furthermore, Tatanga cautioned that if the Government fails to comply with their demands, TYCM along with the people would be compelled to intensify agitation.
