MLA disqualification cases: High Court reserves judgement

A division bench of the High Court of Manipur today reserved the judgement order on different writ petitions filed by ex-MLAs Sanasam Bira and Kshetrimayum Biren against the Speaker of Manipur Legislative
Assembly and two others challenging disqualification orders passed by the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly on June 18 this year.
The judgment was reserved by the division bench consisting of Justice Lanusungkum Jamir and Justice A Bimol after hearing challenging disqualification orders passed by the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly on June 18 this year.
The judgment was reserved by the division bench consisting of Justice Lanusungkum Jamir and Justice A Bimol after hearing 6 different writ petitions, 3 each filed by ex-MLA of Kumbi AC Sanasam Bira and ex-MLA of Lamlai AC, Kshetrimayum Biren before the High Court.
During today's proceeding, the division bench heard the submissions of Senior Advocate HS Paonam appearing for the petitioners and Satyapal Jain Assistant Solicitor General of India assisted by Lenin Hijam Additional AG Manipur appearing for the respondents.
The bench also heard Tussar Mehta Solicitor General of India assisted by Lenin Hijam Additional AG Manipur for respondents.
Mention may be made that the writ petitions were filed challenging their disqualifications before the Court soon after MLAs viz: Yengkhom Surchandra of Kakching AC, Ksh Biren of Lamlai AC and Sanasam Bira of Kumbi AC were disqualified by the Speaker's Tribunal on June 18, a day before the election to the State's lone Rajya Sabha seat.
On July 7, the High Court had issued notice to the Speaker and gave 10 days time to submit a counter affidavit.
