129th Birth Anniversary of Prof SR Ranganathan observed

The 129th Birth Anniversary of Prof SR Ranganathan, the Father of Library Movement of India was observed virtually on Google Meet Platform jointly by the Department of Library and Information Science, Manipur University and Manipur Library Association (MALA) on August 12 .
Prof N Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor of MU, graced the inaugural session as the Chief Guest, Prof CR Karisiddappa, retired UGC Emeritus Fellow, Karnataka University as special guest and K Chaoba Singh, president of MALA presided over the function, said a press release by Department of Library and Information Science, MU.
While welcoming dignitaries and more than one hundred participants from various parts of the country and few participants from abroad, Dr Ch Ibohal Singh, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, MU as the convener of the organizing team remarked the significance of the day, importance of library in the society and basics objectives of observing the National Library Day.
The Chief Guest Prof N Lokendra Singh stressed on the need for transformation of libraries as emphasized by National Education Policy 2020, introduction of innovative ICT based services by modern library system and enhanced accessibility to the digital resources.
He also lauded the efforts made by the Department of Library and Information Science, Manipur University and MALA for carrying out library related activities and observing the significant day.
He also released the draft issue of Volume 13 No 1 June 2021 of "Librarygee Eehou: MALA International Journal of Library Movement" edited by Dr Ch Ibohal Singh.
This official organ of MALA has been released after a gap of more than one decade.
The second session of the event witnessed the National Lecture Programme on Ranganathan in which the invited guest Prof CR Karisiddappa spoke on Prof SR Ranganathan and his contributions.
He narrated the life history of Ranganathan and focused on his contribution in the field of Librarianship in a well comprehensive way which was appreciated by the participants.
As a part of the event the result of the National Level Online Essay Competition on "Reading habit during COVID-19 pandemic" was declared which was conducted by the Department of Library and Information Science, as a part of observance of National Reading Month from June 19 to July 18, 2021 .
In the said competition, Shivani Gupta of IGNOU, New Delhi, Angie Zingsol of Don Bosco College, Maram and Nancy Huidrom of Shivaji University Kolhapur, Maharashtra secured the first, second and third position respectively.
