Imphal, July 13 2021:
Following the inauguration of Makru Bridge on Monday (July 12), Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd (BIPL) is expecting to complete the construction of Barak Bridge on Imphal-Jiribam road by September, this year.
Addressing a press briefing at Mongshangei, Managing Director of BIPL, Imphal, Ningombam Ibochouba said that Union Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, whilst his stay in Imphal, and Chief Minister N Biren advised the implementing agency to complete the bridge construction by September.
Saying that the company is working round the clock to accomplish the set target, he informed that construction of almost 75 percent of the bridge is completed.
Ibochouba then appealed to the CSOs as well as the public to cooperate in the bridge construction for timely completion.
Informing that construction of Makru and Barak bridges began in November 2017 and the former was supposed to have been inaugurated in April 2020, he apologised to the people for the delay in the inauguration due to certain circumstances.
He said that imposition of blockade along the NH-37 and the COVID-19 pandemic are the major factors that hindered the work.
He also stated workers engaged in the bridge construction were also abducted on 4 different occasions.
Apart from all these problems, vehicles carrying steel superstructure of the Makru bridge were stranded at Meghalaya for about a month, Ibochouba said and added, despite all odds, the bridge was inaugurated yesterday, due to the strong and able support from the Government.
