Senapati, August 11 2020:
The Mao Students' Union (MSU) has served a 48 hour deadline starting from midnight of August 11 to the Government to set up an enquiry committee to look into alleged medical lapses which led to the death of A Mayili, tribunal general and former president of the student body.
In an ultimatum addressed to the Chief Minister, Marikho O'Leriina, president, Mao Students' Union expressed deep regret and anguish over the untimely demise of its A Mayili who succumbed to accident injuries on the way to Imphal for medical treatment due to lack of proper medical facilities in Senapati district.
In the letter, the student body mentioned that on August 6 morning, A Mayili suffered an "accidental" deep cut on his right hand wrist.
He was rushed to the Sub-district Hospital, Mao and received first aid.
He was then referred to Imphal due to the severity of the injury, "lack of medical expertise and lack of adequate medical facilities to treat the patient", said the student body.
Significantly, the request for a hospital ambulance to transport the patient to Imphal was allegedly refused by the hospital authorities.
Through the arrangement of a private car, the patient was brought towards Imphal.
However, his condition deteriorated and was taken to the District Hospital, Senapati.
But, due to lack of adequate medical facilities, the patient was further referred to Imphal after giving basic medical treatment.
A Mayili succumbed to his injuries on the way to Imphal due to heavy loss of blood, the body claimed.
Alleging that A Mayili died due to lack of medical expertise and medical facilities, the student body demanded the Government to set up an enquiry committee within 48 hours to look into the medical lapses that led to his death.
If the Government does not respond positively, the student body will stage democratic forms of agitation and hold the Government responsible for any eventuality thereafter, warned MSU.
