State farmer M Modhu Singh has been conferred with the Best Farmer award by Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research, Bharatpur, Rajasthan at the 19th Sarson Vigyan Mela held on February 3 .
A cultivator from Yairipok Yambem, Modhu was one of the three farmers conferred with the prestigious award.
The award was in recognition of Modhu's successful plantation of a high yielding and relatively taller mustard variety (NRCHB-101) at a 14 hectare field in yairipok Yambem.
The cultivation is being undertaken along with 14 other local farmers.
It is said that Modhu decided to try his hands at cultivating mustard after an exposure trip cum training programme to Bharatpur organised by Director of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal last year.
The mustard cultivation under the aegis of CAU experts is said to yield about 16 quintal of mustard seeds per hectare, which the double the quantity from ordinary mustard variety known as M-27 .
