Consultative meet held on Seribiotechnology

A panel discussion on International Consultative Meeting on Seri-biotechnology held at MFDC Auditorium, Palace Gate today strongly recommended the initiation of a cooperative movement to make India a silk country.
The recommendation, among others, was made at the concluding day of the consultative meeting today which was organised by Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal, Dept of Biotechnology, Govt of India.
The panel discussion, which was joined by 10 scientists from India and abroad, also recommended identification of disease and control for better management of insect and host plants for enhanced silk production.
Continuation of domestication efforts to harvest potential wild silk worm resources; improvement through conventional breeding and molecular breeding based on input of functional genomics and biotechnological approach; development of database seri-genetic resources and use of post cocoon technology are included in the recommendations.
The valedictory function of the consultative meeting was graced by Dr Ratankumar, Minister of Works and Transport; O Nabakishore Singh, Principal Secretary (C&I); Prof Randolph V Lewis, USTAR Professor of Biology, Utah State University, USA as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Successful silk worm farmers six best poster contributors were also felicitated during the function.
