Distance learning for jail inmates soon

Inmates of Sajiwa Central Jail may get the facility of distance learning soon as IGNOU is planning to open a special centre at the jail premises.
It was informed by IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal Director Dr S Dilan while speaking at the 6th Convocation of the open university held at the conference hall of Tampha Hotel today.
Along with its different centres across the country, IGNOU organised the 24th Convocation at New Delhi, which however was the 6th Convocation for Regional Centre Imphal.
Director in-charge of Manipur Institute of Management Studies of Manipur University, Dr L Jibonkumar, who was the chief guest of the function, distributed certificates to 26 BA students, 23 MA students, one PG Diploma student at the function.
Dr S Dilan said that the Imphal Centre still does not have its own office building and campus.
The Director also urged the Government and the authority concerned to upgrade the Centre into a full-fledged college having proper infrastructure and building.
Saying that Imphal Centre started functioning from December 1, 2000, Dr Dilan added that IGNOU now has 30 different Study Centres in the State.
The number of students reached 4076 by March 31 this year from only 426 students in 2001, he added.
Dr Dilan further informed the gathering that skill development programmes for women inmates of Sajiwa Central Jail and certificate course on anti-human trafficking for State cops are also in the offing.
Union Human Resource Development Minister E Ahamed and Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Dr D Purandeswari were the chief guest and guest of honour of the 24th Convocation held at New Delhi.
