Imphal, March 05 2014 :
The Imphal Art College authority has today expressed its wish that the Government takes over the lone Art college to make it a full-fledged State run Art institute.
Speaking to reporters at the conference room of Imphal Art College today, Principal of the institute, Yumnam Nabachandra said that the college has maintained retarded growth due to State's apathy towards development of the institute.
Besides, the teaching, non-teaching staff and students of the college have been facing several inconveniences due to lack of enthusiasm on the part of the State Govt to develop the college, he said.
Although the college was established on Aug 15, 1949 as the first Art institute of the NE region, the institute has been trailing behind other such colleges of the region which are established much later than the Imphal Art College, Nabachandra said.
Speaking at the occasion, Senior Lecturer of Applied Art of the college, Kongbam Dillipkumar said that the college has produced worthy and outstanding students down the decades.
Even as the college is equipped with adequate staff and infrastructure, something has been felt lacking since the college is not a full-fledged Govt college, Dillipkumar said.
He cited that lecturers who retired after serving in the college for long years are not entitled pension benefits.
The institute has at present 11 teaching staff, 8 non-teaching staff and 85 students.
The alleged apathy of the Govt towards the welfare of the College has instilled a sense of being put at a disadvantage, Dillipkumar said.
Pointing out that two other colleges set up by the Ministry of Art and Culture have already been converted into a full-fledged State Govt institutes, Dillip also expressed discontentment over the indifferent attitude of the Govt to take over the college and convert it into a full-fledged Govt college.
Staff of the college and representatives of Imphal Art Society have also attended the press meet.
