Imphal, October 04 2014 : Angry locals of Langmeidong under Kakching police station of Thoubal district today staged a protest rally against erection of a stage for a campaign rally for INC nominee for Hiyanglam by-poll to be held on October 17, reports NNN.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) used a large number of police personnel to erect the stage at Langmeidong playground located very close to the house of Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee (MPTCC) candidate Dr Y Radheshyam.

A large number of people in Langmeidong area protested against the plan, saying the stage arranged for the campaign rally should be removed.

A melee ensued between the police and the public.

But additional police personnel led by Thoubal district Superintendent of police rushed to the site and the erection of the stage was completed which again prompted the protesters to take out a rally.

Earlier, a women's organisation Langmeidong Apunba Meira Paibi Lup held a protest meeting yesterday urging MPCC not to make any stage for election rally in front of another candidate.

MPTCC said the party has taken up the matter with the Returning Officer.
