Imphal, August 04 2015:
Almost 80 per cent of the total geographical area of Sugnu Assembly Constituency has been flooded.
Apart from donating nine truck loads of relief materials, local MLA Kangujam Ranjit has decided to station himself within his constituency for the next four/five days.
Ranjit paid a visit to Wangoo yesterday which has been inundated extensively by water overflowing from Manipur river.
He also donated relief materials to the flood affected people there.
Talking to media persons, Ranjit said this year's flood is the most devastating flood for Sugnu area after the flood of 1966 .
Wangoo, Sugnu, Chairel, Nungoo, Tangjeng and Serou have been flooded.
In another word, 80 per cent of Sugnu A/C has been flooded, Ranjit said.
Being the southern most tip of Manipur valley, floods are more devastating in Sugnu and surrounding areas.
While the upstream of Manipur experienced flood once, people in the downstream faced floods twice as most of the major rivers flow from North to South.
There are times when Sugnu areas get flooded due to backwater which flow in reverse direction from Maning Ching, the confluence of Manipur river and Chakpi river as the water current of the latter is quite strong.
The flood has affected more than 20,000 people of Sugnu A/C apart from flooding thousands of paddy fields and a large number of fish farms.
He said that he would stay for four/five days in his constituency to share the plight of affected people and provide some relief materials.
The relief materials donated by Ranjit included 400 quintals of rice.
As Wangoo PHC has been flooded, the health centre is being functioned at another place.
Moreover Sugnu CHC has been opened round the clock, said the MLA.
Meanwhile, around 200 people stranded inside Wangoo village were brought to safer places using three pneumatic boats yesterday.
