Imphal, May 04 2020:
Decrying that many hill tribal tenants, including students staying on rent house in various locations of Imphal, are being deprived of PDS items and essential commodities which are given as relief materials, Hill Tribal Tenants' Committee, Imphal (HTTCI) urged the State Government and all concerned to reach out the same Government support/ assistance to all tribal tenants in Imphal at the earliest.
The committee has also sought the State Government's intervention to ease the rent fees of March and April for the hill tribal tenants in Imphal while claiming that they have been suffering a lot owing to the pressure of the landlords/house owners to pay rental fees for the said months.
Speaking to media persons at Dewlahland, Imphal, HTTCI secretary Momo Tantanga claimed that many residents who are staying on rent in various locations of Imphal have been left out while distributing NFSA rice, essential commodities as COVID-19 relief by the Government.
Further reminding that the State Government and Chief Minister had instructed all concerned to provide PDS items and other essential commodities to all residents in the State, Momo Tantanga lamented many tribal tenants staying in various locations of Imphal are yet to receive Government assistance.
Asserting that these tenants belong to weaker economically background, he stated that hill tribal tenants should be prioritized while endorsing livelihood support and relief materials to the public.
The secretary then informed that hill tribal tenants and students in Imphal East and West districts are also reeling under a difficult situation as their landlords/house owners are mounting pressure to either pay the rental fees for March and April or to vacate their rooms.
Saying that poor people like tenants are facing an economy crisis and financially running low due to the prolong lockdown, Momo Tantanga asked the State Government to come out with an appropriate step to ease the woes of the tribal people.
