International Ear Care Day observed

International Ear Care Day was observed at Medical Directorate campus today under theme "Action for Hearing Loss : Make a Sound Investment" by State Health Society and National Health Mission Manipur.
A spot essay writing competition and a painting competition were also organised as a part of the event.
134 students took part in the essay competition and 85 students participated in the painting competition.
Giving the keynote address, State Nodal Officer, National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) National Health Mission Manipur, Dr P Dhakeshwar Singh said, "International Ear Care Day began on March 3, 2007 after WHO held a convention at Beijing the same year and agreed to eradicate deafness" .
Speaking as the chief guest, Director of Family Welfare Services, Dr K Rajo Singh said that deafness poses many hurdles besides financial problems.
He said, "The essay and painting competition have been organised to spread awareness about the problems posed by deafness.
It will also help the children in gaining more knowledge regarding the affliction" .
"Sound plays a major role in hearing loss and as such it is important to understand how to prevent such scenarios.
Loud sounds often result in degradation of human hearing system.
So it is best to adjust the level of all possible sound to comfortable and palatable levels", he added.
Dr K Rajo Singh also said that hearing loss can also result from an infection caused by insects or any foreign organisms entering the ears.
He pointed out that proper screening of infants at birth and proper check up of individuals above 50 years of age are necessary to prevent hearing loss.
"Do not use matchsticks to scratch inside the ears as it can damage the soft tissues leading to hearing loss", he said.
Additional Director of Health, Dr H Ranjit Singh, Dr P Shyamsunder and Dr MA Sattar were also present at the event.
