Imphal, June 02 2019:
Reacting to the demand of NEIDP to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come out with a clarification on the areas covered by the ceasefire agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN-IM, the United Naga Council (UNC) has asked NEIDP as well as other responsible civil society organisations to restrain from raising queries to such politically sensitive issues.
Rather than pouring out such provocative statements like questioning the ceasefire agreement's coverage, it would be wiser to concentrate more on mobilisation within respective organisations to strengthen peace, development, peaceful coexistence and growth of the State, said a press release issued by the UNC.
It asserted that the Naga political movement for self determination is not a recent development It had already started prior to India's independence, with the submission of a memorandum to the British Simon Commission on January 10, 1929 and the signing of 9-point Agreement on June 26-28, 1947 .
After India's independence, the 16-Point Agreement was signed on July 26, 1960, the first Ceasefire Agreement was signed with the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) in 1964, Indo-Naga Cease Fire Agreement on July 25, 1997 and recently the historic Indo-Naga Framework Agreement was signed on August 3, 2015 .
Involvement of many former Prime Ministers of India starting from PV Narasimha Rao, HD Deve Gowda, IK Gujaral, Dr Manmohan Singh and presently Narendra Modi is well recorded, it added while urging the Government of India and the NSCN-IM for an early settlement to the Indo-Naga peace process based on the unique history of the Nagas and the situation so that there is lasting peace in the region.
