Imphal, May 02 2019:
Following a ban imposed by local people on disposal of garbage and waste materials at Lamdeng, Imphal West, the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) is now facing serious difficulties.
Speaking to media persons about the problem which is growing worse every day, IMC Mayor L Lokeshore said that garbage and waste materials are piling up at different places of Imphal and surrounding areas after local people banned disposal of waste materials at Lamdeng Solid Waste Management and Treatment Plant a few days back.
Local people of Lamdeng banned disposal of waste material at the plant demanding construction of a road on the western periphery of the plant adjoining paddy fields, construction of drains and fence around the plant.
Even though due process has been initiated to translate the local people's demands into action, necessary work order could not be issued as the election model code of conduct is still in force, said the IMC Mayor.
As garbage and waste materials collected by NGOs and IMC have been unloaded within the IMC campus in the absence of a proper disposal site, the campus is now quite filthy and stinky.
The situation is so bad that IMC employees can longer work at their office, he said.
At the same time, IMC has been facing severe difficulties in exploring an alternative site for disposing waste materials temporarily, Lokeshore said.
Highlighting the ever worsening problem caused by lack of waste disposal site, the IMC Mayor sought immediate intervention of the State Government so as to bring a solution after holding a meeting with people settled around the waste treatment plant.
