Need for State water policy stressed

Framing of water policy for the State with the creation of Water Resource department was mooted during a brainstorming programme on water related issues held today at Hotel Classic here.
Speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural function of the brainstorming session organised by Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC), Principal Secretary (PHE), WL Hangshing noted the scarcity of rain water in the region due to large scale deforestation.
Against the backdrop of frequent flood in the State during rainy season, WL Hangshing stressed on the need to formulate a State water policy.
Among others, the inaugural function was graced by Director of DST, Govt of India, Dr Sanjay Bajpai and Director of DST, Manipur Uttamchand Laishram as the guest of honour and president respectively.
Uttamchand Laishram expressed that PHED, the department entrusted to look after water issues in the State, would not be able to tackle the water menace alone.
The technical session was moderated by Dr Sanjoy Bajpai and Director of MASTEC Dr Surendranath Singh.
The resource persons included Prof Majumdar Arunabha of Jadavpur University; AR Shivakumar, KSCST Bangalore; Dr Arunkumar, Professor of Earth Science, MU and Dr N Rajmohon Singh, Professor of Chemistry dept, MU.
