Imphal, March 29 2012:
Vehemently condemning the rape of a housewife from Tamenglong district's Nungleiband village, United Committee Manipur (UCM), Peoples' Action for national Democratic Movement (PANDM) and United people's Front (UPF) have unanimously demanded that stringent punitive action should be initiated against the four accused persons and the Commando SI, who allegedly abetted the crime by providing a small arm.
In a separate statement issued today, the three organisations observed that presence of such elements in the society is more dangerous than the most dreaded diseases.
While the UCM construed that rather than shielding their respective wards, who had strayed from societal norms and outraged modesty of a woman, the parents need to take the lead in demanding befitting punishment for the heinous crime committed by their rogue sons, PANDM asserted that the incident is a fallout of the corrupt system in the recruitment of State security force personnel.
mooting that leniency against the accused persons might encourage them and others to commit similar atrocities in the future, the three organisations affirmed that only a befitting punishment will be acceptable to the people.
They also pledged unconditional cooperation in any movement launched by the people/JAC in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, UPF demanded an impartial investigation into the March 26 night incident at Keishampat area in which a stationary bus was consumed by fire instantly killing two handymen sleeping inside the vehicle.
