Imphal, December 28 2016:
A group of incensed Manipur University students vandalised the office of the Dean of Students' Welfare apart from burning many articles kept inside the office last night after the Vice Chancellor postponed the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) election which was scheduled today.
The incident took place at around 8.40 pm after the VC's decision of deferring the election was announced via the radio.
On learning about the postponement, a large number of students came out of their hostels and gathered near the Students' Home.
After dismantling the main entrance gate of the Students' Home, the angry students broke windows and doors of the Dean's room.
Photostat machines, files and other documents kept inside the Dean's rooms were also burnt.
The raging fire was doused after arrival of fire tenders of Manipur Fire Service.
Police too arrived soon and they fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs in their efforts to control the students' agitation.
Later, the agitating students were driven back to their respective hostels.
Imphal West SP N Herojit too arrived at the spot and took stock of the situation.
At least nine of the agitating students were also pulled up and taken into police custody.
On the other hand, another group of students came out of their hostels and closed the main gate of the university complex demanding immediate release of their arrested colleagues.
The students detained by police were released this afternoon.
Meanwhile, a large number of police including commandos have been deployed inside MU campus and they have been keeping a tight vigil so as to thwart any further untoward incident.
