Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day observed

As observed across the globe to prevent Iodine deficiency disorder, District Health Society, Bishnupur has organized "Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day" for Bishnupur District at Kwakta High School in Moirang AC today.
The programme was attended by Chairperson Kwakta Municipal Council, Minarjan as chief guest; District Mission Director and Chief Medical Officer, Bishnupur Dr T Manihar Singh as functional president while District Family Welfare Officer Dr P Merajao Singh and Vice-Chairperson Kwakta Municipal Council, M Ibetombi Devi attended the programme as guests of honour.
District Level Officers (DLOs), staff of Health Dept and teachers of Kwakta High School were also present in the programme.
As part of the programme, common salt sample brought by the students were tested to know if it contains adequate iodine or not and most of the sample were found to have adequate iodine.
Speaking at the occasion, CMO Dr T Manihar Singh said that the programme was conducted to increase the level of awareness about iodine deficiency disorder as inadequate consumption of Iodine may give rise to host of health issues.
He further said that the requirement of iodine differs from person to person adding that there are lots of foods rich in iodine content.
However, comsumption of iodine rich foods is not enough for a person to meet his/her iodine requirement and to make up the required iodine, India Govt implemented a programme to produce iodized salt so that each and every individual get the adequate iodine, he added and maintained that it is also important to check if the common salt we used have the required iodine.
He also emphasised on the correct way of using iodized salt while cooking and the appropriate time to eat the food.
Saying that non-iodized salt cannot be sold in the market as per a guideline of Govt, Dr T Manihar Singh informed all to take help of ASHA workers if they want to check the level of iodine content in the common salt that are sold in the shop whether it contains adequate iodine or not.
Iodine deficiency not only led to expansion of Thyriod Gland and obesity but also caused excessive hair fall, weight gain, dryness of skin etc, he informed and said that it is important for the pregnant woman to have adequate iodine so that her child do not suffer from many diseases.
He, therefore, urged all to consume adequate iodine for a healthy and prosperous society.
As part of the programme, District Family Welfare Officer, Dr P Merajao Singh spoke on "Iodine Deficiency Disorder" as resource person.
