Imphal, May 26 2020:
With the spike in the number of returnees and COVID-19 cases in the State, different student bodies have appealed State to set up more quarantine centres and ramp up coronavirus tests.
Pointing out that there are huge lapses in preparedness and maintenance of quarantine centres opened for returnees, Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) in a joint statement said that authorities concerned should strictly monitor and enforce the COVID-19 safety guidelines at the centres.
Mentioning that they had participated in preparation and cleaning of the quarantine centres for flight returnees at Little Flower School, HRD Academy and Xtra-Edge School, the bodies stressed that there is need for setting up more centres to accommodate those who will be returning in the following days.
Apart from setting up enough quarantine centres, Government should ensure that there is strict appliance of the safety guidelines including social/physical distancing norms at the quarantine centres.
People packed in small rooms at the quarantine centres will enhance spread of the virus among the inmates, said the bodies.
Stressing the need for enhancing COVID-19 tests, the bodies said that health authorities and State should ensure rapid and timely conduct of tests.
The results should be available on time as expected to take up quick follow-up actions to separate the person(s) concerned and contain the virus, they said.
To further improve functioning of the quarantine centres and face the virus, locals of the surrounding areas should be given proper awareness.
To increase manpower at the centres, the bodies suggested that Government employees may be utilised for the purpose.
