Anti-poaching campaign cum awareness programme conducted

Toubul Youth Club in association with Global Science Club Khoijuman, POSGAT Thinungei and Biodiversity Management Committee Nachou conducted Anti-Poaching Campaign Cum Awareness programme under the aegis of Bishnupur Forest Division in different localities residing near Loktak lake in Bishnupur District today.
The campaign was led by Range Officer Bishnupur Forest Division S Ratankumar Singh along with its staff and members of various NGOs, during which the villagers of Potshangbam, Nachou, Toubul, Pukhrambam, Sanjenbam, Ningthoukhong, Thinungei, etc have been sensitized on the importance of wild animals and migratory birds and not to capture or kill them.
Regarding the campaign, Range Officer Bishnupur Forest Division S Ratankumar said that, in earlier times, large numbers of migratory birds flown to Manipur in search of new habitation at Loktak lake every year but their numbers have been reduced drastically in the last few decades due to mass killing and capture by the villagers.
He further appealed the villagers not to kill and capture the migratory birds which is punishable under Wild Life Protection Act 1972 with 3 years jail term or a fine of Rs 25,000 or both.
