Clinical session on "Palliative Medicine" held

The inaugural programme of the clinical session for the four days "Foundation course on Palliative Medicine for Medical Officers" was held today at the Conference Hall, Department of Radiation Oncology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal.
The session was jointly conducted by the State Non Communicable Disease Cell, Department of Radiation Oncology, RIMS, Institute of Palliative Medicine Calicut (WHO Collaborating Centre), and Pediatrie Cardiac Society of India.
It was organised by the National Program for Palliative Care, NHM Manipur, and the State NCD Cell, said a release issued by RIMS.
The inaugural programme was graced by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal; Dr Chambo Gonmei, Director, Health Services, Government of Manipur; Prof Y Sobita Devi, Head, Department of Radiation Oncology, RIMS, Imphal and Dr Suresh Kumar, Director, Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar emphasized the importance of palliative care for terminally ill patients with conditions like cancer and Alzheimer's .
He highlighted the need for trained human resources despite RIMS's readiness to establish a robust palliative care centre.
"Expanding training programmes, increasing MD seats, and encouraging higher studies are essential to reducing patient travel and ensuring comprehensive care within the State.
RIMS is dedicated to prioritizing palliative care in the region", asserted the Director.
Dr Chambo Gonmei highlighted the importance of palliative care for critically ill and bedridden patients, including the elderly and those with stroke or cancer.
He stressed on community involvement, especially in remote areas, and the role of healthcare professionals in providing care both in institutions and at patients' homes.
"Establishing a palliative care centre at RIMS and extending outreach services to underserved regions is essential for comprehensive and compassionate care", he added.
The event was attended by distinguished guests, medical professionals, healthcare providers, and staff and students of RIMS, Imphal.
