Imphal, August 16 2014 :
The long awaited Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project is most likely to be put into motion in full swing from July next year.
The hydel power project which is targeted to generate 66 MW would be taken up as a joint venture between the State Government and NHPC.
Notably, there is a huge gap between power shares entitled to the State from different power projects located in the Northeastern region including Loktak Project and the State's power demand.
With a view to plug in this gap, the State Government has been expecting a lot from Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project.
According to an official source, a conducive situation is steadily emerging and execution of the long awaited project may begin in full swing from June or July next year.
Four companies have qualified in the pre-qualification tender held for the Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project.
The companies which have qualified in the pre-qualification tender are Patel Company, L&T Company, Simplex Company and AFCON Infrastructure.
The company which quoted the lowest rates under suitable terms and conditions would be selected.
Before holding the tender, the four companies would have to visit the project sites and they have already intimated their desire to go for site visit.
What is needed the most at present is construction of approach roads.
Rengpang- Irang road as well as Tousang Khunou-Tousang Khullen road which are crucial for bringing heavy machinery for the Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project have not been repaired.
Nonetheless, the State Government has given its assurance to repair the two approach roads as early as possible.
Tousang Khunou-Tousang Khullen road would be repaired first and Rengpang-Irang (Power House) road would be taken up in the second phase, added the source.
Notably, a bailey bridge constructed over Leimatak river which would connect Tousang Khunou to the project's power house has been already inaugurated.
