Awareness on organic farming held

One day awareness cum training programme on organic farming was held today at Yangoiningthou community hall, Bishnupur organized by Bharatiya Kishan Sangh, Manipur Prant, Bishnupur Zilla under the sponsorship of Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University, Imphal.
Large number of farmers from different parts of the district took part in the training programme conducted to infuse the ideas and benefits of organic farming.
President of Shahakar Bharti, Manipur Kh Bhabeshwor attended as the chief guest while president of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, Manipur Prant N Indubuson Singh was the functional president.
DO Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Bishnupur district, Ng Ajit, Deputy Director of Extension Education Dr Angad Prsad, social worker Th Yaima and Kh Nabakumar were the guests of honour.
Addressing the gatherings, Dr Angad Prasad stated that with the changing global phenomenon of people opting for more chemical free foods, the Govt of Indian has taken keen initiative to introduce 'organic farming' to the North Eastern States as the soil are virgin, free from harmful pesticides and manures unlike other States of the country.
He added that for many reasons the North Eastern States were left out in the post-independence 'green revolution' movement of the country.
But there has been a paradigm shift where people are more health conscious as foods grown using artificial fertilizers are hazardous and can cause serious health risks in the long run.
People have now realized that foods grown in organic farms are more nutritious and healthy.
He said that the North East States have all the required qualities to develop extensive organic farming activities.
Further he added that organic foods are preferred across different parts of the country and abroad and there is high prospect of exporting.
Th Robindro of Imphal East KVK stressed on the importance of documenting any activities related to farming by farmers.
He said such practice is rare in the State but fanners should keep a separate record book of their regular activities.
K Devaduatta Sharma, V Pande from Centre of Organic Farming, Dr M Sumaijit and Prof M Indira Devi spoke on different topics relating to organic farming as resource persons.
