Imphal, June 13 2011:
Different bodies have condemned State Government's recent moves of evicting residents from Lamphel Yaipha Leikai and Naga River colony.
Opposing the State Government's decision of acquiring Naga River colony for the construction of a 5-Star hotel, All Manipur Muslim Pangal Women's Organisation raised questions why the Government is trying to uproot a locality where people from different communities are residing.
The organisation also demanded for acquiring land from Government offices like MPSC, Government Oil Depot and Directorate of Tourism instead of issuing eviction notice to the residents of Naga River colony.
One Mahadev temple, three churches, one graveyard and many houses must be destroyed if the Government has to construct the hotel at the colony, the organisation said adding that it is against the secular principles of the country.
On the other hand, Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) has expressed deep concern over the eviction of 70 people of 14 households from Lamphel Yaipha Leikai.
As the eviction notice was served at 11 am on June 5 and the residents were evicted in the morning of the next day, the people of the locality had not been given enough time to respond to the Government's notice, CORE fumed.
Pregnant women and children were worst affected in the Government's forced eviction, CORE said adding that the displaced people need health care intervention.
CORE urged the Government to have a peaceful dialogue with the affected people to resolve the issue.
