State's troupe to perform in first Winter National Convention

A group of eleven 'pung sankritan (cholom)' artistes led by Guru S Thanil (Padmashree awardee) left Imphal today to perform in the first Winter National Convention of SPIC MACAY at IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
The troupe was today flagged off from Kwakeithel Nganappi Thong Makha Leikai community hall by Th Chitaranjan, Secretary to the Governor.
The first Winter National Convention will be held from December 13 to December 19 under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of HRD and the Ministry of Tourism.
The artistes will showcase the rich cultural and artistic values of the State through cultural performances, stated Chitaranjan before the flag-off ceremony.

Such voluntary activities are very important.
Young people should have extensive knowledge about the cultures of other States and instill the same in the younger generations, he added.
President of SPIC MACAY, Imphal Chapter Dr W Ibomcha said that the troupe along with the teachers will interact with the students after every performance.
He stated that the convention is set to host more than 1400 delegates from different parts of the country.
Intensive programme for 'pung sankritan (cholom)' will also be conducted during the convention, he added.
SPIC MACAY is a voluntary youth organisation which promotes Indian cultural heritage including Indian classical music, classical dance, folk music, yoga, meditation, crafts and others.
In order to achieve its goals, SPIC MACAY has been organizing concerts, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, informal discussions, and talks by eminent scholars and thinkers.
These programmes are organised in schools and colleges by collaborating with local clubs.
