A one day discussion on downstream people's problem on Mapithel dam, was held at Manipur Press Club today, under the aegis of Irabot Foundation Manipur.
The discussion was attended by Dr Homen Thangjam, Assistant Professor, Indira Gandhi Tribal University Manipur, Kh Nishikanta, president of Irabot Foundation Manipur, Y Kiran, president of Thoubal River Nung Leingoi Workers Association and Ak Bishwajit, chairmen of Thoubal River Conservation Committee, as the presidium members.
A four point resolution was passed in the event.
The discussion acknowledged that the root cause of the current problems faced by the stakeholders at downstream areas are due to the construction of Mapithel Dam.
The discussion supported the demand to stop the commissioning of the Dam and affirmed to let Thoubal river flow freely.
Th discussion further urged the State Government to constitute a fact finding team consisting of CSOs, community leaders and stakeholders.
It also urged for providing alternate means of livelihood for the affected victims of Mapithel downstream areas immediately.
Lastly, the discussion also urged the authority to make clean and pure water of Thoubal river available to the people.
