MLA Biren announces cash prize

Heingang AC MLA N Biren has announced that he will award a cash prize of Rs 20,000 to the student, who secures highest mark in MIL (Meitei Script) in this year's HSLC examination, conducted by BOSEM.
Speaking at a simple function held at his official residence, N Biren said that the unfortunate incident of burning down of the State Central library could have been averted if the agitating volunteers of MEELAL and State Government had reached an understanding on time.
N Biren said that he tried his level best as an MLA to bring both the sides to the negotiating table.
As a student, he used to feel embarrassed when people of other States asked him about Manipuri script, he added.
As such, he morally supported MEELAL's cause, Biren added.
MEELAL vice-president Naokhomba said that students have written MIL subject in Meitei script from this year's HSLC examination and it is a dream which has been cherished since the past many decades.
He further said that MEELAL under the leadership of Chingsubam Akaba launched different forms of agitation demanding replacement of Bengali script by Meitei script in Manipuri subject in 2005.Following this intense agitation, the State Government produced a white paper regarding the matter and started implementing Meitei script in May 2006.Saying that N Biren showed his moral support to MEELAL at the peak of their agitation, Naokhomba said that a negotiation between MEELAL and Government could be brought about through the MLA.
Namoijam Tomba said every Manipuri would now feel proud that they have their script to show to the world.
Former DM College Principal Sairem Nilbir said that the movement for the revival of Meitei script began on March 16, 1956.MEELAL president S Tomba Mangang said that the State Government is yet to depute Meitei script teachers to all the Government schools although the script was introduced in the text books of Manipuri subject ten years back.
Stating that there are many TET eligible teachers, he urged the Government to appoint adequate number of teachers.
