Imphal, July 10 2014:
Volunteers of Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FREINDS) have pulled up 11 non-locals, who come to Manipur without valid identity documents.
Addressing a press conference held at its Keishampat office, FREINDS secretary publicity W Shanta said that the non-locals were detained at Sangakpham Bazar while checking an inter-State passenger bus (MN01-1387) coming from Shillong at around 9.30 am today.
He said that one of the FREINDS volunteers, who returned to Manipur in the same bus from Assam lost his mobile phone inside the bus.
The phone was recovered from the possession of a 17-year-old non-local as the volunteer searched it inside the bus, said Shanta.
While verifying the identity of the boy, 10 other non-locals including two minors aged around 16 and 19 years, were found travelling in the same bus without valid identity documents, he added.
Maintaining that they came to Manipur as construction workers of Simplex Private Ltd, Shanta said that they possessed fake Panchayat identity cards.
Expressing concern over not heeding to the appeal of FREINDS not to allow boarding of non-locals without valid identity documents, Shanta cautioned the bus service operators that action would be initiated against them if they continue bringing in non-locals who do not possess valid identity documents.
All the detained non-locals would be deported to their respective States tomorrow, he added.
