Imphal, August 08 2015 :
Rather than restoring the sunken portion of Barak bridge on war footing, BRO has been taking quite a long time to repair the particular portion.
Loaded trucks stranded near Barak bridge, Leingang-pokpi, the sunken portion of the same bridge and the dilapidated condition of Imphal- Jiribam highway were inspected by a joint team of the Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association and the Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union yesterday.
A 25/30 feet long portion of Barak bridge sunk as a loaded truck of Power Grid Corporation of India tried to cross the bridge on July 26.Since then around 300 loaded trucks remain stranded at Leingangpokpi.
Speaking to media persons here today, Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association president H Ranjit and Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union general secretary M Anil decried that BRO has achieved no visible progress in restoring the sunken portion though it has been 14/15 days since a portion of the bridge sunk.
When major portions of Makru bridge went out of service in 2014, it took just three days for a joint team of TDC, PWD and BRO to restore the bridge, Ranjit maintained that the BRO have no reason to take such a long time in restoring a portion of Barak bridge.
Truck drivers have been facing a hard time as around 3/4 Kms long section of Imphal-Jirbam highway on either side of Makru bridge is highly dilapidated and BRO has shown no urgency to repair it.
Ranjit decried that the Government of India has been paying no heed to all the complaints and grievances raised against BRO's lethargic working style.
He also urged the State Government to replace existing Barak, Makru and Irang bridges with RCC bridges.
Before new RCC bridges are constructed, the Government should ensure that the existing bridges are full repaired and strengthened.
He then called upon all transporters to transport loads whose weights are permissible under the Central Motor Vehicle Act.
