Manipur HC Chief Justice inaugurates JMFC Court at Mao

Justice Siddharth Mridul, Chief Justice, High Court of Manipur inaugurated the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court at Mao today in the presence of Th Basanta Kumar Singh, Minister of Law & Legislative Affairs; Manipur High Court judges Justice A Bimol Singh, Justice A Gyaneshwar Sharma, Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui and Losii Dikho, MLA, 48-Mao AC .
It may be noted that Nungshitombi Athokpam, Commissioner (Law) delivered the welcome address while MLA Losii Dikho expressed gratitude to the Law & Legislative Affairs Department for bringing such facilities to the region.
In his address, Chief Justice Mridul expressed immense pride at the completion of the new Court building, fulfilling a long-held aspiration for the people of the region.
The inauguration ceremony celebrated the culmination of years of effort to bring a well-equipped, functional, and permanent judicial facility to Mao, previously underserved in terms of access to justice.
The new JMFC Court building, completed in just over a year since the project's commencement on October 12, 2023, was built at a cost of Rs 4.53 crores.
The project was funded through both Central and State contributions, with the Central share amounting to Rs 4.07 crores and State share of Rs 45.32 lakhs.
The facility includes state-of-the-art infrastructure, such as video conferencing technology to facilitate hybrid hearings, ensuring that justice remains accessible regardless of geographic barriers.
The project also includes essential infrastructure like an underground sump, internal roads, and proper security features.
Additionally, two residential quarters for judicial staff have been built, with provisions to make the building disabled-friendly in the near future.
Justice Mridul also took the opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of Chipfokho Athia, who graciously donated the land for the project.
In recognition of her generosity, her son has been appointed as the watchman of the Court.
The Chief Justice handed over the appointment letter to the mother.
Expressing his appreciation for everyone involved in the project, including the Law & Legislative Affairs Department, the Engineering Cell, and contractor M/S G Thaninjao R Naga & Sons, Justice Mridul noted that the true measure of success for the Court building would be the positive impact it has on the lives of the people it serves.
As part of the inauguration, Justice Mridul also called on the legal community in the region to unite in the spirit of service, upholding the dignity of the institution and ensuring that justice is delivered impartially and promptly.
Speaking through virtual mode from his office, Th Basanta Kumar Singh apologised for his inability to attend the program physically.
As Mao borders Nagaland, the Minister asserted the need to establish such facilities in order to provide justice to the people.
Although the traditional way of dispensing justice is present in the region, he highlighted the need to establish such courts in the region as of utmost necessity.
He also hoped that the establishment of the Court at Mao will deliver justice expeditiously to the people.
The new JMFC Court building is expected to strengthen the judiciary's presence in the area, reducing the need for citizens to travel long distances to access legal remedies and providing a modem, comfortable space for legal proceedings.
