Chandel, August 04 2015:
Leaders of the Naga People's Front (NPF), Manipur Unit visited flood affected areas in Chandel district and provide relief material to the displaced villagers today.
A team of NPF led by its State president Awangbow Newmai along with newly elected Chandel's ADC members visited the emergency relief camp of flood affected villagers of Island and its surroundings and handed over 25 bags of rice and 50 Mosquitos net as relief assistance to the relief committee.
Later on, the team went to Chakpikarong sub-divisional headquarters and inspected the areas affected by the recent flash flood including the collapsed Chakpikarong's bridge, Government high school and Primary Health Centre.
During the visit, the team came across large scale destruction of residential houses by the flash flood.
The flood deposited alluvial silt of about two feet inside every house, school, health centre, playground as well as along the road.
Moreover, timber, logs and tree roots were also piled up in front of some houses which were brought down by the strong current of Chakpi river.
A large number of volunteers from neighboring Kuki villages were also seen helping the flood affected villagers in cleaning the houses.
After interacting with the flood victims and social organization's leaders, State unit president of NPF handed over 320 blankets and some tarpaulins to the relief committee of Chakpikarong.
Briefing media persons, Awangbow Newmai said, "in order to show our solidarity, NPF Manipur Unit has come to visit the flood affected villagers near Pallel and Chakpikarong.
And it is very disheartening to see the plight of the flood victims" .
The NPF leader maintained that as there is a high risk of epidemic outbreak in the area, the State Government should dispatch a medical team besides providing necessary relief assistance to the flood affected villagers.
In Chakpikarong, properties worth crores of rupees have been lost due to the flood but the immediate need of the people of the area is medical attention and reconnecting all the disconnected routes.
As such, the State Government should dispatch a medical team and reconnect all the routes at the earliest besides providing necessary relief assistance, said the President.
Awangbow also urged the department concerned to investigate and conduct a survey at the surrounding areas to prevent another disaster as the people are still apprehensive of more disasters if rainfall continues in the near future.
The State president of the NPF further expressed gratitude to all the Kuki brethrens from the neighboring villages who voluntarily extended a helping hand and took part in cleaning the houses of the flood affected villagers.
Extending such help on humanitarian ground by our Kuki brethren is highly appreciated by the NPF, he added.
