Imphal, July 02 2019:
Acting on a petition filed by the Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) that some personnel of Excise Department have been extorting money from drug users, the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked the DGP and the Excise Commissioner to furnish a report on the matter by July 16 .
According to the petition filed by CoNE president RK Nalinikanta, Constable W Parijat posted at Lamphel Excise Station and his accomplices allegedly apprehended drug users from different places and took them to the station where they took Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 from the families of the drug users.
In case the families refused to pay money, the Constable and his accomplices threatened to seize vehicles belonging to the families of drug users.
This practice has been going on for the past many years, according to the petition.
Even though these acts of apprehending drug users by Excise personnel in civilian clothes and extortion from families of drug users have been reported in media apart from lodging complaints to the DGP, no tangible action has been initiated till date, the petition filed to MHRC on June 4 decried.
