Imphal, February 02 2014:
Some equipment and weapons used by Japanese Army at the Battle of Imphal during World War II were discovered today in the course of excavation within the Lamdan complex of Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) .
The excavation was a joint exercise of the Second World War Imphal Campaign Foundation and MMTA.
Japanese army and allied forces fought for more than three months during World War II at Laimaton hill range including the area which is presently occupied by MMTA.
The said area located around 38 Kms South of Imphal is under Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur district, said Yumnam Rajeshwar of the Second World War Imphal Campaign Foundation.
Japanese army's 33rd Division who came along Tidim Road and allied forces fought fierce battles at Laimaton hill range and surrounding areas amidst heavy rainfall from April to June, 1944 .
Ammunition, bayonets and pieces of bombs used by Japanese army were discovered during the excavation inside the MMTA complex today.
