CCpur DC leads in cutting down Poppy plants

CCpur, February 01 2018: Acting swiftly on the Chief Minister's instruction to ensure a drug free society in the wake of rampant Opium cultivation in the hill areas of the State, the district administration Churachandpur today ordered a day-long anti-Opium exercise at five different locations destroying about 65 acres of illicit poppy crop worth about Rs 3.5 crore.

The massive exercise, one of the biggest in the State was led by the Deputy Commissioner Shyam Lal Poonia and the Superintendent of Police Rakesh Balwal in areas under Saikot sub-division while the Additional SP (Ops) and the SDPO led the exercise under Singngat sub-division.

Multiple sources from the police as well as the civil administration claimed that the DC and his team comprising of about 60 police personnel raided four areas between Tuijangphai and Benajou village under Saikot sub-division destroying the illicit crop grown on 5 5 acres of land with an estimated value of 2 crores and 75 lakh.

The other team led by the Additional SP which launched simultaneous raids at Lungthul (T) in Singngat sub-division with the assistance of about 70 police and AR personnel also cut-down about 10 acres of poppy plantation, worth about Rs 50 lakh.

While highlighting the drive today, Poonia said he is making concerted efforts to look into the ways and means to provide alternate avenues to such villages where Opium plantation is undertaken so that the villagers can be weaned away from the crop that is a threat to the society.
